Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services carry out the transportation of specimens from GPs, Medical Centres, outlying Hospitals and clinics.
We also run specimen transport shuttles within the Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services Network.
Our transport also delivers mail, Pathology consumables, Medical Records, Pharmacy and other supplies.
Enquiries should be directed in the first instance to Michael Yates, Deputy BSPS Transport Manager either via email, michael.yates@nhs.net or phone 07919 393776 or the BSPS Transport office at Cody, in Farnborough on 01252 329837.
All samples transported should be packed to conform with the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR). Full details available from www.dft.gov.uk. Search for ‘guidance on transport of Infectious Substances’. This requires 3 levels of packaging as detailed below.
1. Primary receptacle - Blood tubes in specimen bag with documents in separated wallet. Specimen bags are supplied by Pathology, available from the issue room. Each bag should contain sufficient absorbent material to absorb the full liquid contents should a leakage occur. See recommendations below.
2. Secondary packaging – Large clear transport bags supplied by Pathology, are available from the issue room. These bags should be ready when the Transport arrives at the collection time.
3. Outer packaging - These are large versapak bags used by our own Transport or by couriers.
There should be an absorbent pad in the bottom of each versapak bag in case of spillage.
