FLU PCR TESTING
- Flu PCR test is for the detection (and differentiation) of Influenza A and Influenza B.
- Testing is only available after prior discussion and agreement with the Consultant Medical Microbiologist, including out of hours.
- Suitable samples are nasal aspirate/washes and nose and throat swabs.
- Specimens should be collected following the standard procedures and placed into viral transport medium (VTM).
- VTM is available during the normal working day from the Pathology Issue room (phone no 0118 3225662)
- Samples should be transported to the laboratory immediately. If immediate transport is not possible samples can be stored for up to 72 hours in a refrigerator before processing.
- Please notify the laboratory of a sample’s imminent arrival so that testing can be performed as soon as possible. This should be done direct to the lab during the normal working day or via switchboard out of hours to contact the on- call Microbiology BMS. · A result will normally be available within 2 ½ hrs of the specimen arriving in the laboratory.
