A 6ml plain clotted blood sample is required. The date of onset of symptoms and full clinical details must be included with the specimen. A convalescent sample (greater than 10 days after the onset of symptoms) may be needed if the first sample is taken in the acute phase of the illness. Tests are selected on the basis of the clinical details given - if these are inadequate, meaningful results may not be obtained. The tests include respiratory viruses, Chlamydia, Coxiella burnetii (Q Fever), Mycoplasma, Legionella, Syphilis, Toxoplasma and Streptolysin O (ASO). Relevant specialist tests will be referred to reference laboratories, in which case turn-around times may be 7 - 10 days or longer. The Toxoplasma antibody test is not routinely performed except in the presence of appropriate symptoms.
N.B. Helicobacter antibody screen is only appropriate for patients under 45 years of age.
